Description
Tulbaghia violacea, commonly known as wild garlic, is an evergreen perennial. It is a bulbous, fast-growing plant that can reach a height of 0.5 m. They can be recognised by their long, narrow, strap-like, leaves which are slightly fleshy and can smell strongly of garlic when bruised.
They produce a pinkish/mauve flower which appear during January – April. When these flowers are picked, they also smell of garlic.
Wild garlic grows easily in most soils, but prefers a well-drained soil consisting of compost.
Some uses of wild garlic include:
- Edging plants
- Rockeries
- Along pathways for decoration
- Ground covers
An excellent water-wise plant as little watering is required.
