Lemon Thyme
Lemon thyme is a sweetly scented evergreen herb with a mild citrus flavour. It grows to a height of 20 to 30cm and produces dark pink flowers in summer. It is not as hardy as other thyme varieties, and will appreciate a thick layer of mulch to protect its roots during the cold winter months. Lemon thyme is especially loved by bee keepers, as bees are attracted to the plant and it gives their honey a lovely flavour.
Planting tips:
- For best results, plant lemon thyme in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-draining soil.
- Enrich the soil by adding a small amount of compost. Be careful not to add too much, as this can cause the herb to produce masses of tasteless leaves.
- Plant bushes 25cm apart and water well.
- Keep the area around your lemon thyme bushes well weeded.
Uses:
- Lemon thyme is a natural antiseptic and expectorant. A cup of lemon tea is said to relieve a sore throat, laryngitis and chest infections.
- Due to its citrusy flavour and taste, lemon thyme is a popular ingredient in stuffing, chicken dishes and fruit salads.
- A cup of lemon thyme tea may also be a natural way to ease a hangover. Ancient Greeks believed in its power to deal with the after effects of overindulgence.
