Focus on Cats

Once considered demigods, cats have been important members of the household for thousands of years. These days millions of cat owners around the world enjoy the unconditional love and friendship bestowed upon them by their cats. Cats are philosophical, methodical, quiet, tenacious, and fond of order and cleanliness. Cats do not confer their friendship lightly. If you are worthy of their affection, a cat will be your friend, but never your slave.

History of cats

Today there are more than 36 species of cats, including the domestic cat. When the various species of wild cat became domesticated is hard to establish. While it is possible that cats dwelt in farming villages in the Middle East as far back as 10 000 years ago, conclusive evidence, from ancient Egypt, dates them back to 2000 BC. Pharoahs declared them demigods, the Romans declared them guardians of the home, and in Asia they were regarded as protectors of the temples.

A cat’s care requirements are very basic :

• Housing and bedding – a safe, warm place to sleep, like a basket, bean bag, ring pillow or your bed!
• Basic equipment – litter tray, food bowls and saucers, a scratch post, toys and grooming equipment
• Diet – a blend of wet and dry food is good. However, there are new products that feature an all in one pellet diet that is nutritiously balanced. Don’t forget fresh water daily.
